Huskies Can't Get Things Going Against No. 13 Red Raiders

Nov 24, 2002

LUBBOCK, Texas - Natalie Ritchie made four 3-pointers and scored 20 points to lead No. 13 Texas Tech to a 99-67 victory over Washington in front of 9,731 fans at United Spirit Arena in Lubbock, Sunday.

The Huskies fell for the first time this season (1-1), while the Lady Raiders picked up their first win (1-1) of the 2002-2003 campaign.

Junior All-America candidate Giuliana Mendiola was Washington's high-scorer for the second-straight game with 17 points, all coming in the second half. Also in double-figures for the Huskies was junior Andrea Lalum (10 points). Senior All-America candidate Loree Payne and senior Emily Autrey each added nine points. Autrey, who celebrated her 22nd birthday today in Lubbock, had a team-high six rebounds and four assists.

Payne nailed a three-pointer in the opening minutes of the game, giving her sole possession of 10th place on UW's career scoring list. With nine points against Texas Tech, Payne now has 1269 points in her Husky career.

Texas Tech (1-1) scored 11 straight points to extend its lead to 19-5 with 12:20 remaining in the first half. Guard Jia Perkins initiated the run with a steal and layup, and Ritchie capped the surge with a 3-pointer.

Washington (1-1) closed within 21-15 at 10:12 of the first half, but Tech countered with a 13-0 run that stretched the lead to 34-15 with 4:41 left in the half.

The Huskies weren't able to get within lower than 20 point-deficit against the Lady Raiders in the second half, despite Mendiola's 17-point scoring barrage including a trio of three-point baskets. The 32-point loss was Washington's largest losing margin since a 33-point loss to Oregon State (94-61) on Feb. 16, 1981.

Plenette Pierson scored 15 points and Latoya Davis added 14 for Texas Tech.

The Huskies return home to host the Seattle Times Husky Classic at Bank of America Arena, Nov. 29-30.
