Nov. 26, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State junior outside hitter Juliana Escobar was selected to the 2002 All-Pac-10 Women's Volleyball Team announced today by conference commissioner Tom Hansen. ASU senior middle blocker Julia Leddy was also honored by being selected as honorable mention All-Pac-10.
Escobar becomes ASU's 11th player and 15th overall selection to be named All-Pac-10 since the league officially started recognizing women's volleyball in 1986. Stanford senior outside hitter Logan Tom repeated as the Pac-10 Player of the Year.
Escobar is among the league leaders in kills (4.31 per game/5th), service aces (0.53 per game/1st), digs (3.40 per game/5th) and points (5.08 per game/5th). She has recorded 15 double-doubles (kills/digs) this year and has 10 or more kills in 18 of her 22 matches played this year (82%). The junior transfer from Barton County CC in Kansas, is ranked eighth in the ASU single-season record books with 45 service aces and set ASU rally-scoring records with 27 kills and 26 digs in a five-game win over Oregon (10/18). Escobar was the 2001 AVCA Junior College Player of the Year before arriving in Tempe.
Leddy earned honorable mention status as she is putting the finishing touches on a solid career. ASU's only four-year senior, the two-time team captain is ranked fourth in the Pac-10 with a .353 attack percentage and is second on the team averaging 2.99 kills per game. She has cracked the top 10 in the ASU career record books with 221 block assists and is on pace to break the hitting percentage record with a .337 mark.
Escobar, who missed her first match of the year last weekend vs. No. 1 USC with a knee injury, is expected to play this weekend as the Sun Devils (12-11, 8-10 Pac-10) finish up the 2002 regular season at the UNLV/Hard Rock Thanksgiving Classic in Las Vegas. The Sun Devils play Oral Roberts at 5 p.m. Friday in the tournament's opening match.
