No. 12 Cal Beats No. 23 UC Santa Barbara to Advance to NCAA Third Round

The 12th-ranked California men's soccer team defeated No. 23 UC Santa Barbara, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Edwards Stadium in front of over 1,200 fans to claim its first ever postseason win, advancing to the third round of the NCAA Championships. The Golden Bears improve to 14-5-2 for the season as the Gaucho's finish the season at 18-3-1.
In the 16th minute, a Gaucho defender fouled forward Calen Carr, awarding the Bears a free kick 19-yards out. Sophomore midfielder Mike Munoz took the kick for Cal, firing the ball over the wall of defenders at 16:07 to score his team-leading eighth goal of the year.
Cal held onto the lead heading into the second half, as both teams let off five shots during the first stanza.
At 77:22 freshman Pieter Berger connected with a pass from midfielder Nick Hatzke in mid field. Berger dribbled the ball until he reached the 16-yard mark, went one-on-one with Gaucho goalkeeper Danny Kennedy, and fired the ball at Kennedy who was able to get a piece of the ball but unable to prevent the goal to increase Cal's lead to 2-0.
UC Santa Barbara responded with a goal seven minutes later, as Drew McAthy headed in his 17th goal of the season, assisted by Tony Lochhead, off one of one nine corner kicks for the day for the Gauchos.
In the second half, defender Noah Merl was credited with a team save as he blocked Matt Kubota's near-goal in the lower-left corner of the post.
This was the first win in NCAA Championships in Cal history, improving its postseason record to 1-8.
Both teams notched 11 shots in the 90 minutes of play.
Cal will now face the winner of the Loyola Marymount vs. UCLA match, which begins at 7 p.m. tonight. If UCLA wins, Cal will travel down to Los Angeles for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday, Nov. 30. If Loyola Marymount wins, Cal will host LMU Saturday, Nov. 30 at 1:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
