Troy Polamalu Named A Finalist For Thorpe Award

Nov. 27, 2002

LOS ANGELES--USC All-American senior safety Troy Polamalu has been named one of three finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented to the nation's top defensive back.

Polamalu, an All-American last fall, has 63 tackles (7 for losses) and an interception in 2002 despite playing most of the season with a sprained ankle.

He joins Ohio State's Mike Doss and Kansas State's Terence Newman as the 2002 finalists.

The winner will be announced on ESPN's College Football Awards Show, broadcast from Disney World in Orlando, Fla., on Dec. 12. Formal presentation of the award will be in Oklahoma City on Feb. 11, 2003.

Former USC All-American safety Mark Carrier won the Thorpe Award in 1989.
