On Nov. 20, the Cardinal scored a 63-62 victory over then eleventh-ranked Xavier in the second round of the Owens Corning Pre-Season NIT, and then followed up with a 69-65 decision over seventh-ranked Florida (11/27/02) in the semi-finals of the NIT at Madison Square Garden ... With two games at the Pre-Season NIT at Madison Square Garden and three previous games, the Cardinal will have played five games from Nov. 18 through the 29th ... The Cardinal opened the regular season with a 61-57 decision against Boston University (11/18/02), a 63-62 decision over Xavier (11/20/02), a 79-62 verdict over Rice (11/24/02) and a 69-65 win over Florida (11/27/02).

Stanford is in the midst of its 88th season of collegiate basketball competition ... The Cardinal returns ten players from a squad that produced a 20-10 record, a second place finish in the Pac-10 Conference, and a school record eighth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament ... Stanford returns 47.6% of its offense, and 56.8% of its rebounding ... One starter returns, Julius Barnes, while a second starter, Teyo Johnson, will not immediately join the basketball team after suffering a sprained left knee in the closing minutes of the Stanford-California football game on Nov. 24 ... Johnson, who was a starting wide receiver this year, is expected to be out of action three-to-four weeks ... Justin Davis started 18 games last year, and has started all four games this year ... Two other starters from a year ago, Curtis Borchardt and Casey Jacobsen, left Stanford after their junior seasons to join the NBA ... Borchardt plays for the Utah Jazz, but is currently injured with a broken foot, while Jacobsen plays for the Phoenix Suns ... Jacobsen led the Pac-10 in scoring (21.9 ppg) last year, while Borchardt led the league in rebounding (11.4 rpg) ... It was the first time in Pac-10 history that two different players from the same school led the league in scoring and rebounding ... Sophomore point-guard Chris Hernandez will be out of action until at least mid-December ... Hernandez, who was projected as a starter at point-guard, broke a bone in his left foot last month in practice, and recently underwent surgery ... Barnes has assumed the point-guard duties.

Stanford earned a right to play in New York City with a 61-57 victory over Boston University (11/18/02) and a 63-62 decision over Xavier (11/20/02) ... After a cold first half in which Stanford only shot 25 percent (6-for-24), Stanford hit .483 (14-for-29) in the second half in the win over BU ... The Cardinal was down 28-19 with 18:20 left in the game, but scored seven straight points, and took the lead at 31-30 with 14:14 to play ... Stanford extended the lead to eight points, 54-46, with 2:46 to play before settling for the four point victory ... Josh Childress led Stanford with 22 points (career-high) and eleven rebounds ... Justin Davis added a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds ... Two nights later, the Cardinal upset eleventh-ranked Xavier as Julius Barnes and Childress each scored 14 points ... Against Florida (11/27/02), sophomore center Rob Little scored career-highs in points (18, 7-for-11 from the floor), rebounds (9), and blocks (2) ...
