Volleyball Sweeps Rice and Butler at Albuturkey Tournament

ALBUQUERQUE - The UCLA women's volleyball team played twice on the opening day of the Albuturkey Tournament in Albuquerque, NM, defeating Rice 30-20, 31-29, 30-21 before sweeping Butler 30-17, 30-23, 34-32. UCLA is now 18-13 on the season.

In the first match of the day, Cira Wright posted an impressive offensive performance for the Bruins, downing a match-high 12 kills and was error-free for a .667 attack percentage in the match. Nancy Barba led the Bruins in blocks with one solo and five block assists. The Bruins also posted six service aces in the match, two each by Krystal McFarland, Lauren Fendrick and Heather Cullen. Defensively, sophomore libero Chrissie Zartman recorded 19 digs.

In the nightcap against Butler, Brynn Murphy led the way with 11 kills on 15 swings, good for a .600 hitting percentage. Brittany Ringel added 10 kills while Lauren Fendrick had nine kills along with team-highs of eight digs and two blocks. Chrissie Zartman notched six digs, leaving her 10 shy of UCLA's single season record, currently held by Samantha Shaver (499 in 1993).

UCLA closes the regular season on Saturday night in the Albuturkey Tournament against host New Mexico before returning to Westwood to await the NCAA Tournament selections on Sunday night.
