Bogus And Makoski Named Finalists For National Freshman Of The Year

Dec. 2, 2002

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State soccer players Elizabeth Bogus and Manya Makoski have both been named one of 12 finalists for the 2002 National Freshman of the Year by Soccer Buzz Magazine. Bogus and Makoski selections make Arizona State the only school in the country with multiple freshmen of the year honorees. The winners will be announced later in December after a vote of every Division 1 Women's Soccer Head Coach and the Soccer Buzz staff. The following is the list of accomplishments Bogus and Makoski obtained in their initial season as Sun Devils.

Liz Bogus o Forward o Freshman o Sandy, Utah

Named the Pacific-10 Conference Freshman of the Year ... Bogus becomes the second Sun Devil - in only the seventh year of the program - to garner Pac-10 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year honors in the past four years, joining former All-American Stacey Tullock (1998-2001) on that elite list ... In 21 games this season, Bogus ranks first in the Pac-10 Conference in game-winning goals (7), third in shots (62) and goals (10), and sixth in points (22) ... Her seven game-winners also tied the Arizona State school record for a single-season ... Bogus is a 2002 All-Pac-10 First Team selection, one of only two freshmen to earn that distinction this season ... She was twice selected as the Pac-10 Player of the Week, named to the Sept. 30 Soccer America Team of the Week and the Oct. 1 Soccer Buzz Magazine Elite Feet of the Week.

Manya Makoski o Midfielder o Freshman o Trumbull, Connecticut

Makoski started in 19 games (missing the first two due to U-19 National Team commitments) setting an ASU single-season record with nine assists, also good for third in the Pac-10 ... Four of Makoski's nine assists were game-winners to Bogus ... 2002 All-Pac-10 Second Team selection ... Makoski finished the year second on the team in goals (6), first in assists (9) and second in points (21) and game-winning goals (2). Makoski was one of the team's most essential pieces on offense and defense all season long as they made their run into the NCAA Championships.
