PULLMAN, Wash. --- The Washington State soccer team ended a successful season on the field by making the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years. The Cougars wrapped up a triumphant year off of it by landing seven student-athletes on the Pac-10 All-Academic team.
'We are very pleased to have individuals recognized for their academics in such an outstanding conference,' Head Coach Dan Tobias said. 'It shows their level of commitment and I am very proud to be their coach.'
Ironside, a senior from Kent, Wash., is making her third appearance on the first team. She has a 3.97 grade point average majoring in Education. Ironside started all 20 matches in 2002, distributing two assists. She is just the third Washington State player to earn first team honors three times, joining Jody Payne (1993, 1995-96), and Lindsey Jorgensen (1999-2001).
Hobby earned second team All-Academic honors in 2001, and improved to the first team this year. Hobby, a junior from Danville, Calif., has started all 57 matches in her Cougar career at defender. She is majoring in Business Administration and carries a 3.87 grade point average.
Cecchini landed on the first team in her first year of eligibility. The sophomore from Tualatin, Ore., earned a 3.81 grade point average in Biology. Cecchini started 11 matches for Washington State in 2002, and 14 as a freshman.
The Cougars were also represented by a pair of student-athletes on the second team. Senior Katrina Stroh, who is third on Washington State's career list for points and goals, was selected on the basis of her 3.62 grade point average in Communications, while defender Mariette Boyce earned her way on the team with a 3.75 in Psychology. Boyce, a native of Wilsonville, Ore., started 19 matches this season and scored two goals.
WSU has now had seven players on the Pac-10 All-Academic team each of the last two years. Those figures mark the highest number in program history.
