Arizona Women in Third, Men in Eighth after Day One of Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas - In the first day of competition in the 2002 Texas Invitational, the Arizona Women's swimming and diving team is in third place with 226.50 points, while the men sit in eighth place with 62 points. Individually, the Wildcats registered 2 NCAA automatic qualifying times and 11 consideration times. Sophomore Emily Mason automatically qualified for the NCAA's with her swim in the 500y free and senior Beth Botsford swam her 'A' time in the 100y fly event.
Both NCAA automatic qualifying times were achieved in the finals events, which took place on Thursday night. In addition to being victorious in the event, Mason garnered her 'A' time in the 500y free (4:39.77).
Botsford's automatic qualifying time also came in the evening session; in the 100y fly (53.94)
Sophomore Jessica Hayes also found success in Thursday's evening swimming. Hayes posted NCAA consideration times in the 200y IM and the 50y free when she swam those events in times of 2:03.72 and 23.36, respectively.
The majority of relay events took place in the evening and the Wildcats showed their prowess in these events by posting another two NCAA consideration times.
In the morning session, the Arizona men and women combined for seven NCAA consideration times. Mason led the way with qualifying times in two events, the 500y free (4:46.34) and the 200y IM (2:03.37).
Botsford achieved consideration times in two events as well. In the 100y fly, Botsford touched the wall in 54.19, missing an NCAA automatic qualifying time by .05 seconds. She also got the 'B' time in the 200y IM (2:03.56).
The freshman trio of Katie Willis, Jenna Gresdal and Smith also garnered consideration times during Thursday's early competition. Willis' time was achieved in the 500y free (4:53.49), while Gresdal and Smith qualified in the 50y free with times of 23.46 and 23.57, respectively.
Pac-10 foe California leads the men's competition with 266.50 points while the Longhorns of Texas lead the women with 333 points.
Arizona Swimming and Diving begin the second day of competition in the 2002 Texas Invitational at 10 a.m. with the preliminary rounds. The finals conclude the evening at 10 p.m. Both rounds take place at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center.
