Dec. 5, 2002
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Naya Higashijima swam to a second place finish and broke her own 1,000-yard freestyle school record with a time of nine minutes, 56.74 seconds Thursday evening in the opening event of the Husky Invitational at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
Higashijima's previous record time was 10:00.85, which she set last season. Erin Reilly of the Sierra Marlins Swim Team won the race with a time of 9:54.65.
All four Oregon State participants set lifetime best times in the day's only race. Kristi Kuhlmey (10:14.05) finished ninth, Grace Peterson (10:20.62) took 18th, and Danielle Kinney (10:23.44) placed 20th.
'I am very pleased with our performances tonight,' Oregon State head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'The first race is always the hardest because the intensity and tension is pretty high. We got off to a good start and we are excited about the next three days.'
Sixty college and club teams are participating in the meet, which concludes Sunday evening. Five events are scheduled for Friday, with preliminary races starting at 9:30 a.m. and finals beginning at 5:30 p.m.
