Men's Swimming & Diving Finishes Fifth At Texas Invitational

Dec. 7, 2002

AUSTIN, Texas -- The 11th-ranked Arizona State men's swimming and diving squad finished the three-day Texas Invitational in fifth-place with action wrapping up on Saturday night at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. On the final day, the men were led by senior Christian Harcsas, who registered an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 200 back (1:43.82) on the way to a third-place finish.

Also impressive was junior Nick Brunelli, who shaved over a second off of his previous season-best in the 100 free to finish second in 43.94. Bobby Zaabadich finished 12th (44.99) and his prelim time of 44.97 was three-hundredths of a second short of an NCAA 'B' time.

Not to be left out, freshman Leonardo Martins had an outstanding swim in the 200 breast (2:00.23) to garner a fourth-place finish and vault himself into third in the all-time ASU record book in this event. Martins swim was over four seconds better than his previous season-best. Joey Clements also took over four seconds off his previous season-best to finish in 12th (2:02.75)

Freshman David Kolozar continues to impress in the 200 fly, where he clocked a 1:46.76 to raise himself on the ASU all-time top ten to fifth. He finished sixth in the event and his time is good enough for NCAA 'B' consideration.

The men's 400 free relay team (2:58.27) finished in fourth and their time was good enough for NCAA consideration. The men's squad does not see competition until January 2, when they host Harvard at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center at a time to be announced.
