Comments from Head Coach Dennis Erickson Regarding the Insight Bowl

Dec. 8, 2002

Corvallis, Ore. - The following comments are from head coach Dennis Erickson following Sunday's (Dec. 8) practice:

'I'm very excited about the prospects of being in Phoenix and playing a very good football team in the University of Pittsburgh. The weather will be excellent, and we had a pretty good time there the last time we played a bowl game in that city. It's really an ideal situation, and I know our players are excited about it. The fact that Pittsburgh played such a close game with Miami has certainly grabbed the attention of our players.'

On head coach Walt Harris

'I have known Coach Harris for a long time. He is an offensive minded coach; in fact Pittsburgh does a lot of the same things we do on offense. I really haven't had a chance to watch tape on them, but I did see their game with Miami. He has done a great job with that program, he really has turned things around there.'

About the Insight Bowl as opposed to the Holiday Bowl?

'I think it would have been tough for the Holiday Bowl to invite us since we finished behind Arizona State and they defeated us - I didn't expect to play in that bowl. The Insight Bowl was the next best thing as far as we were concerned.'

About the three-game losing streak midseason?

'I would have taken the toilet bowl at that point. These players deserve to go to a nice bowl; it's a reward for them. To lose the first three conference games, then come back like we did says a lot about the character of this team. This team really deserves a bowl appearance, they're excited about the opportunity.'
