Arizona State Men's Divers Will Not Compete Next Meet

Dec. 11, 2002

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The next meet for the Arizona State men's swimming and diving squad on January 2, against Harvard will not include diving events, head diving coach Mark Bradshaw announced today. The team, which just finished competition at the Texas Invitational this past weekend, won't dive again until January 4, when Missouri and Wyoming visit the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center to take on both the full men's and women's swimming and diving teams.

The men's swimmers only will compete against Harvard on January 2, at 9 a.m. at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

The divers are coming off of a good showing at the Texas Invitational where Joona Puhakka remained unbeaten and Trisha Tumlinson set two school records. The following is a brief overview of this past weekend's diving events.

Men's Diving
Freshman diver Joona Puhakka continued his outstanding early season performances, where he is undefeated in competition as a Sun Devil. On Thursday, he captured the 1-meter event in a season best 362.05, beating his nearest opponent by over 45 points. Friday's result was similar, with Puhakka racking up a 628.55 in the 3-meter, 11-dive event, this time beating the second-place finisher by over 80 points. His score was 3.7 points off of Mark Briggs' school record set in 2000.

Sophomore Thomas McCrummen, last year's Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year for Diving, earned third-place in the 1-meter on Thursday with a 295.40, and ninth-place in the 3-meter on Friday with a 440.90. Freshman Brant Bingham finished tenth in both the 1-meter (222.25) and 3-meter events (429.05).

Women's Diving
Sophomore transfer Trisha Tumlinson had a fantastic weekend in the diving pool, where she set two school records and earned two second-place finishes. On Friday, Tumlinson recorded a 291.95 in the 1-meter springboard, besting the previous school record of 287.10 that junior Jessica Stenson set last year. In Saturday's platform diving event, Tumlinson scored a 453.15, which betters the previous ASU record of 438.65 that Trish Malatesta recorded in 2001. In the first 11-dive event that the squad has seen this year, Tumlinson recorded a 446.95 in the 3-meter springboard preliminaries on Friday, which barely missed the cut for that evening's final round. Tumlinson was the only diver to compete for the women over the weekend.
