Paige Benjamin Named To AVCA All-Region Team
Dec. 11, 2002
SEATTLE -- Senior outside hitter Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) has been named to the Pacific All-Region team by the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA). Senior setter Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) was a honorable mention selection.
Benjamin was named to the 12 member All-Region team for the first time in her career after leading the Huskies to their best finish since 1997 with a 20-11 record, fifth place finish in the Pac-10 (9-9) and a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament. An Academic All-American and first team Pac-10 All-Conference selection, Benjamin became the school's all-time leader in season kills this year with 573 kills and ranks fourth on the career chart with 1,287 kills. Her 5.31 kills per game average is 14th nationally and second in the Pac-10. Benjamin's name is littered throughout the Husky all-time records and lists first in career hitting percentage (.307), sixth in total attacks (3,096), eighth in block assists (266) and ninth in total blocks (292).
Maurer was named to the six-member honorable mention team for the first time in her career. Out of the seven regions, the Pacific was the only not select a setter as a first team honoree and Maurer was the only setter on the honorable mention squad. Her 13.19 assists per game average is 19th nationally and tops the Pac-10. A first team Pac-10 All-Conference selection, Maurer finished her career with 3,190 assists, which ranks second on the Husky chart, while her 85 career service aces rank 10th. She is just the second player in Washington history to dish 3,000 career assists.
With Benjamin's first team selection, she is on the national All-America ballot. First, second and third team national winners will be announced on Wednesday, December 18, 2002.
