Cal Baseball Signs Large 2002 Recruiting Class

BERKELEY, CA - The University of California baseball team has signed 10 athletes to national letters of intent, featuring four pitchers, two catchers, a utility player, an outfielder, a shortstop and a first baseman/outfielder, it was announced today by Cal head coach David Esquer.
Esquer and his staff signed pitchers Kevin Barnum, a 6-2, 185-pound left-hander from Laguna Hills (Laguna Hills HS); Case Dahlen, a 6-5, 210-pound left-hander from Palos Verdes Estates (Peninsula HS); Brandon Morrow, a 6-2, 165-pound right-hander from Rohnert Park (Rancho Cotate HS); and Alex Rollin, a 6-2, 220-pound right-hander from Los Gatos (Los Gatos HS).
The two catchers signed by the Bears are Garrett Bussiere, a 6-2, 175-pounder from Thornton, Colo. (Northglenn HS) and Travis Howell, a 6-2, 220-pounder from Los Gatos (Los Gatos HS). Also included in Cal's large 2002 recruiting class are 6-2, 200-pound outfielder Chris Errecart from Stockton (Lincoln HS), 6-2, 170-pound shortstop Josh Satin from Hidden Hills (Harvard-Westlake HS), 6-0, 185-pound third baseman/outfielder/right-handed pitcher Jordan Karnofsky from Sacramento (Christian Brothers HS) and 6-3, 195-pound first baseman/outfielder Brennan Boesch from Los Angeles (Harvard-Westlake HS).
Kevin Barnum was first team All-Sea View League and second team CIF Southern Section for Laguna Hills High School, recording 69 strikeouts in 54.0 innings with a 1.06 ERA as a junior. Case Dahlen was selected the No. 4 prospect in the country in Perfect Game's Top 100 Class of 2003 Prospects entering his junior year before suffering an injury to his left shoulder. He still batted .356 with two home runs and a .529 slugging percentage, earning second team All-Bay League honors for Peninsula High School. Brandon Morrow was 6-3 with three saves and a 2.50 ERA last spring at Rancho Cotate High School. He also threw three complete games and had 52 strikeouts in 48.0 innings, earning honorable mention all-league and helping his team to the North Bay League championship.
Alex Rollin and Travis Howell are battery mates at Los Gatos High School. Rollin, who is also the starting quarterback on the football team, went 9-3 with three saves and struck out 103 batters in 78.0 innings as a junior, earning first team all-league and second team All-Central Coast Section. Howell batted .381 last spring with eight doubles, a triple, four home runs and 28 RBI, earning first team all-league honors.
Garrett Bussiere batted .508 with three doubles, a triple, seven home runs and 33 RBI as a junior at Northglenn High School, earning a spot on the Denver Area All-Metro team. Last spring, Chris Errecart batted .485 with six triples, seven home runs and 35 RBI, earning both league and all-area MVP honors for Lincoln High School.
Josh Satin and Brennan Boesch are teammates at Harvard-Westlake High School. Satin batted .500 as a junior with seven doubles, a triple, 11 home runs and 31 RBI, earning all-league and team MVP honors for the third year in a row. He was also named the MVP of the 2002 L.A. Daily News Tournament. Last spring, Boesch hit .466 with seven doubles, seven triples, seven home runs and was nine-for-nine in stolen bases. He was ranked as one of the top three position players in California, and one of the top 25 prospects in the nation, by Baseball America.
Jordan Karnofsky hit .394 with 12 doubles, a triple, three home runs and 26 RBI as a junior at Christian Brothers High School. Karnofsky was also 2-2 with six saves on the mound, earning all-league honors and was a member of the Northern California All-Star team.
'I am really excited about this year's recruiting class,' said Esquer. 'I think we addressed all of the needs we are going to have entering the 2004 season. I feel this large and talented class is as good of a group as any we have had since I have been here.'
