Oregon State Falls To No. 9 Texas Tech, 67-51
LUBBOCK, Texas - Plenette Pierson scored 19 points as ninth-rankedTexas Tech held Oregon State scoreless for nearly 5 minutes in each half of a67-51 victory Tuesday night.
The Lady Raiders (5-1) got their fifth straight win, after trailing the Beavers (5-3)briefly in the early going.
Oregon State junior Hollye Chapman nailed a pair of 3-pointers over the first six minutes of action, helping the Beavers to an 8-4 lead with 14:27 left in the openning half.
Texas Tech answered with a 12-2 run over the next five minutes to pull in front for good but the Beavers kept the game competitive, narrowing the margin to four points on eight different occasions.
Tech allowed the Beavers to get as close as 36-32 with 16:13 remaining in the game, but went on an 8-2 run, garnering a 44-34 lead when OSU guard Leilani Estavan left the game with an injured knee.
'Texas Tech plays very aggressive,' said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra. 'It was good experience for us because that's how USC plays.'
Tech made just 25 percent of its shots early in the game. But it found therange as the first half continued, went on a 12-2 run to lead 16-10 andexpanded the advantage to 30-22 at the break.
'We held them to just 30 points in the first half,' said Spoelstra. 'We were giving ourselves a chance to win.'
Chapman had a season-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and added nine rebounds for Oregon State. Estavan, who finished out the contest with eight minutes left, contributed 12 points and a season-high eight assists. Junior post Krystal Turner came off the bench to pull down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Jia Perkins, who added 14 points for Tech, has scored in double figures inall six games this season.
Coming into the game, Tech had won its last four games by margins of atleast 20 points. The Beavers held the Lady Raiders to their lowest scoring total of the season, 20 points below their season average.
Oregon State continues its road swing at Southwest Missouri State on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:05 PST.
