Beavers Sweep To Four Dual Wins

Dec. 20, 2002

HONOLULU, Haw. - Oregon State swept to four dual meet wins Thursday evening in non-league women's swimming, beating Hawai'i 69-35, Cincinnati 74-21, Dartmouth 84-27 and Central Washington 86-8 in a pentagonal dual at Hawai'i. Naya Higashijima, Suzanne Starkey and Birte Steven all had seven first-place finishes in dual scoring for the Beavers (7-2 overall, 0-2 Pacific-10).

'We were a little concerned going into the meet because we'd worked very hard and done a lot of yards this week,' said OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny, whose team is on its annual winter training trip. 'We knew we were a little broken down and tired, so we were a little concerned with how they'd react to getting in the blocks and racing.'

OSU got off to a quick start as its 200-yard medley relay team won against all four opponents, then freshman Kristi Kuhlmey swept to victory against all four foes in the 1,000 freestyle. That got the Beavers rolling.

'We needed to make up some points from diving, especially against Hawai'i,' Podkoscielny said. 'They have a couple of good, fast international swimmers who made us concerned as far as the meet goes. The way the meet was set up, with a low-scoring format, it was favoring a smaller team. We couldn't rely on our depth - we had to get job done at the top spots.'

Higashijima won the 500 freestyle against all four opponents and took the 200 freestyle against every opponent except Hawai'i; Starkey swept the 100 butterfly and won the 100 backstroke against every opponent but UH; Steven won the 100 breaststroke against all four opponents and took the 200 individual medley against all but Hawai'i.

Kuhlmey swept the 1,000 free and Kristin Huston swept the 100 freestyle, while Ausra Pacebutaite won the 50 freestyle against every opponent but Cincinnati. All told, the Beavers had 40 of 44 possible first-place dual finishes in the swimming events.

'This was a good reference point for us, come off a very good performance at the Husky Invitational,' Podkoscielny said. 'We were at the Husky meet, came home for finals, flew here and had a whole week of hard work, and this puts us back where need to be. Our performances today reassure us that we're where we need to be to have great second half of the season and top it off at Pac-10s.'

The Beavers will have two more days of practice on their trip, then return home Sunday for the holidays. OSU's next meets will be at Utah on Jan. 10 and at Brigham Young on Jan. 11.
