Women's Basketball Quotes vs Iowa State - 12/22/02
Head Coach June Daugherty
On Washington Victory: 'It was a great college game. We knew it was going to be a battle with Iowa State. It was a total team victory; We had to have everyone step up more than usual, changing the lineup with Kellie (Dalan) being out. And I just thought everyone accepted that responsibility and did a great job.
On Lack of Turnovers: 'Not to turn the ball over except for only 3 times, that's got to be a world record. Only 1 turnover the second half, that's amazing against this team. We were very concerned about their size and their zone but fortunately for us we were able to take care of the ball and get the ball moving more especially the second half to get it into those gaps and find the big kids inside.'
On Andrea Lalum's Game: 'Andrea just responded great. She started in the first half trying to kick it out and find her teammates and in the timeouts and at halftime we said 'Hey, you've got to take over, you're one-on-one.' They were denying the perimeter because our guards are such good shooters, and it was great to see her respond.'
On Defense: 'They forced us to play 'player-to-player'. We've probably not played that much 'player-to-player' in two years, I don't think. But that's how much we respect them, their 3-point shooting, just a very talented team to play.'
On Non-conference Results: 'Well, we're excited about the results, there's no doubt. I really feel like we're getting better in a lot of areas. At the beginning, we had to get better offensively, and the players responded to that. Then the second half I think the focus has definitely moved to getting better on the defensive end, especially tonight having to play as much 'player-to-player' as we did, and then rebounding. And we're getting there. We lost the battle a little bit today on the rebounding end of things and that's definitely something we need to get better at if we want to win the Pac-10, which we do.'
On Inside Game: 'A lot of people have questioned whether we have an inside game, and the answer is absolutely.'
On Emily Autrey's Contributions: 'I'd just like to compliment Emily Autrey. She has come off the bench and been 'super-sub' all year and was given one day's notice to be back in the starting lineup. That's a different role to step into and I thought she did a very good job.'
Guard Kayla Burt
On Andrea Lalum: 'Andrea was open in the middle on that high post all night long. It was amazing; she hit that turnaround jumper so many times. I was so surprised that they didn't make the adjustment. I saw her again flashing up high and I knew I was going to hit her, she made a nice move and put the bucket in.'
On Iowa State player, Lindsey Wilson: 'She's tough, she's a good player and make some good shots down the stretch. We knew that she was going to be doing that. Overall we played good team defense and helped out a lot. She's a tough kid and she played really well.
Guard Giuliana MendiolaOn Iowa State: 'They played great defense, they were rotating really fast. We're a pretty good shooting team and our shots weren't falling in the first half. In the second half we got loose in their breakdowns and we were able to hit our shots.'
On team: 'This is the best team we've had since I've been here. We've definitely grown since last year. Last year's preseason was really shaky. Some games we showed up and other games we wouldn't, but this whole preseason we showed up every single game except one and we long that one. We've definitely grown so far. It's exciting to be ready to go into Pac-10 on such a high right now.
Center Andrea Lalum
On opportunities: 'It was fun. They gave me an opportunity to go one on one. Usually I get double-teamed or triple teamed, but they just let me go. We have awesome shooters on the perimeter; I wouldn't want to leave them open either. They have to pick what they're going to do. Either they're going to deny them or going to deny me.'
On getting a quality win: 'It was a great game all around because we've been blowing our opponents out by ten to twenty points. It was great for us to show that we are mentally strong. Most games we're up so much that we're staying steady. This time it was up and down so much that it tested us in so many aspects. It was a great way to finish off our preseason.'
