Dec. 24, 2002
ASU MEETS BUCKNELL: The Arizona State Sun Devils (6-3) play host to the Bucknell Bisons (4-4) on Friday, Dec. 27, in the first round of the ASU/azcentral.com Hoops Classic at 7:30 p.m. UC-Santa Barbara (3-5) meets Nebraska (4-4) in the first game at 5 p.m. The consolation and championship take place at 5 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28. ASU's holiday tournament is in its 36th year in 2002. The Sun Devils have won 26 of the 35 events (including 10 of the past 13) and have advanced to the championship in 27 of the past 28 years. ASU is 58-12 (.829) in the tournament all-time. ASU is 1-1 vs. Bucknell, as ASU won 80-55 on Dec. 28, 1999, in the first round of the tournament. Tommy Smith had 14 points and seven boards in his 10th collegiate game. The senior trio of Smith, Kyle Dodd and Shawn Redhage will each play in their 100th career game against Bucknell.
WE LIKE IKE: Freshman Ike Diogu has been all that was advertised through nine games, as he leads the team in points (18.2), rebounds (6.6), minutes per game (29.7), field goal percentage (53-of-99 for .535) and free throws made and attempted (55-of-73 for .753). In his past six games, the 6-8, 250-pound freshman is averaging 7.3 rebounds per game. He is averaging 8.1 free throw attempts per game and is the only Sun Devil to reach double digits in all nine games. In the past three games, he is 21-of-22 (.955) from the free throw line and has three 20-point games on the year, including 27 against Lafayette that is tied for the fourth-best freshman scoring mark in ASU history. He has posted nine rebounds in each of the past two games and is averaging 20.1 points in his past seven games.
VS. PURDUE: Arizona State played one of its most efficient games in recent memory with its 70-53 win over Purdue on Dec. 21 in the Las Vegas Showdown. ASU was 25-of-46 (.543) from the field, outrebounded the Boilermakers 35-26 and led by as many as 12 in the first half and 20 in the second half en route to the win. ASU's 46 field goal attempts was the fewest in the past 211 games, going back to when it also attempted only 46 vs. SMU on Dec. 29, 1995. ASU held the Boilermakers to opponent lows in points (53), field goals and attempts (17-of-43), rebounds (26) and assists (four). Ike Diogu led ASU with 18 points and nine boards, which matched a season-high, and Tommy Smith (15 points) and Shawn Redhage (14 points) both had season-highs. Smith also matched a season high with five assists.
REDHAGE RALLYING: Senior forward Shawn Redhage has been very effective off the bench in the past two games. Against Purdue, he posted 14 points in 15 minutes and against Nevada on Dec. 10 he had 12 points in 20 minutes. In the past two games he is 8-of-14 (.571) from the field, 10-of-11 (.909) from the free throw line and is averaging 13.5 points and 17.5 minutes. In his career, he is 186-of-233 (.798) from the free throw line, the sixth-best mark in Sun Devil history. Redhage has posted double digits in scoring in three games this year, matching last year's total. The 14 points vs. Purdue is the most since he had 16 vs. UCLA on Jan. 18, 2001, in his sophomore season.
FROSH STARTERS: With Pac-10 season approaching next weekend, the only freshmen to start season openers in the loop this year were Ike Diogu (Arizona State), Mike Jensen (Washington), Lamar Hurd (Oregon State) and Andre Igadoula (Arizona).
DEVIL DATA: In the past two seasons, ASU is 19-3 (.863) when it leads at the half...no opponent has scored 100 points in Tempe in the past 238 games. The last to do it was Arizona on Feb. 27, 1988, a 101-73 contest...ASU is 29-4 (.878) under Evans when it shoots 50 percent, including a 19-2 (.904) mark in the past three seasons...ASU is 5-0 when it outrebounds its opponent this year...in ASU's six wins the opponent has shot below 50 percent, in the three losses it has shot above the halfway point...ASU is 41-of-56 (.732) from the free throw line in its past two games...ASU has held five opponents to under 40 percent field goal shooting...
FRESHMAN DOUBLE-DOUBLE TRIVIA: In the past 11 seasons, only one freshman has posted a double-double, which Ike Diogu has come close to. Chad Prewitt had 15 points and 10 rebounds on Dec. 8, 1998, vs. Stephen F. Austin. Before that, Mario Bennett posted a double-double vs. Lousville on Feb. 22, 1992, with a 15-point, 11-rebound output in a 63-62 overtime win. When you tally it, a double-double by a Sun Devil freshman has happened just once in the past 315 games and has not happened in the past 121 games.
PLAYER QUICKIES: Junior college transfer Jamal Hill has been a solid newcomer, as he is 10-of-20 (.500) from behind the three-point stripe and is averaging nine points per game, fourth on the team...Jason Braxton leads the team in assists (30) and steals (17)...after going 8-of-20 (.400) from the free throw line against Utah on Nov. 27, Curtis Millage has got back in the groove as he is 7-of-11 (.636)...Tommy Smith has 21 blocks on the year and 119 in his 99-game career...Donnell Knight is second on the team at 6.3 rebounds per game and has two double-doubles on the year and four in his career...Kyle Dodd has 219 assists and just 90 turnovers in his 99-game career, a ratio of 2.43-to-1...Kenny Crandall is still recovering from a broken fibula suffered in April and has played 24 minutes in the past four games, but is 7-of-8 (.875) from the free throw line on the year...
NON-CONFERENCE: ASU is 6-3 in non-conference action this year, with the two holiday tournament games remaining. Past non-conference regular season records under Rob Evans were 7-2 (2001-02), 8-3 (2000-01), 7-4 (1999-00) and 8-4 (1998-99).
ROB EVANS: Arizona State coach Rob Evans is now 152-144 (.514) in his 11th season overall and is 66-63 (.512) in his fifth year at Arizona State.
