Coppin State Visits Gill Coliseum for a Saturday Afternoon Men's Basketball Game
Dec. 27, 2002
Corvallis, Ore. -
SERIES: This is the first meeting ever between Oregon State and Coppin State College, out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Beavers have played just one MEAC school in the history of the program, defeating South Carolina State, 92-57 Nov. 26, 1999 in the first round of the SoCon Holiday Hoops Tournament at the BiLo Center in Greenville, SC. OSU also posted a 62-46 victory over SCSU Dec. 23, 2001 at Gill Coliseum.
NICE START: A win Saturday would give OSU a 7-2 record entering the Pac-10 Conference season. The 7-2 mark would be the best for an Oregon State team since Eddie Payne guided the program to a mark of 9-2 during the 1997-98 campaign.
WINNING WITH DEFENSE: With the exception of the white hot shooting of Kansas State last week, the Beavers have been stingy on defense. The Beavers lead the conference for scoring defense allowing 62.2 points per game. The Beavers are 6-0 when allowing less than 75 points.
DECEMBER TO REMEMBER: OSU enters Saturday's game attempting to earn its sixth victory of the month, which would be the program's most since a six-win 12th month during the 1997-98 season.
BROTHERLY LOVE: Well, not exactly brothers, but current Beaver Sal Vance and Coppin State's Raheem Scott and Daryl Jones played in the summer in Philadelphia on AAU teams.
DOMINATING THE GLASS: Oregon State enters this week with a plus-9.8 rebounding margin, second in the Pac-10 Conference. Granted the competition is becomoing stronger, but the program hasn't finished in the top-5 of the conference for rebounding since the 1989-90 season (5th), and has finished last five times during that period.
