Wildcats Win Big Against Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Dee-Dee Wheeler scored a career-high 29 points, andNo. 21 Arizona tied a school record by shooting 64.3 percent in an 83-53victory Friday night over California as the teams became Pac-10 Conferenceplay.

Wheeler made 13 of 16 shots, and Aimee Grzyb added 18 points on 8-of-9shooting for the Wildcats (7-2). Wheeler also made all three of her 3-pointattempts, and added five rebounds, four steals and three assists.

California (3-5) got 15 points from Leigh Gregory, but shot just 31 percent.

Shawntinice Polk scored 17 points for Arizona, but her string of eightstraight double-doubles was broken when she managed just six rebounds.

Coach Joan Bonvincini missed her first game since taking over at Arizona in1991. She remained with her family in Connecticut, where her brother died ofcancer on Christmas Day.

Bonvincini will also miss Sunday's game against No. 6 Stanford. Associatehead coach Denise Dove Ianello is running the team until Bonvincini returns.

Both teams started slowly, with turnovers stalling their offenses. But theWildcats broke an 8-8 tie with a 6-0 run, and steadily pulled away, aidedimmensely by Cal's 25-percent shooting in the first half.

The Golden Bears went more than 5 minutes without scoring in the first half,and trailed 37-20 at the break. The game turned into a rout when Arizona scored14 of the first 16 points in the second half.
