Bowlby, Hook Pin Down A Win
Jan. 4, 2003
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Oregon State heavyweight Andy Bowlby recorded his seventh pin of the season and 149-pounder Tony Hook earned another as the Beavers beat Cal State-Bakersfield 29-10 in Pacific-10 wrestling Saturday night. OSU (2-3 overall, 1-1 Pac-10) also got major decisions from 165-pounder Matt Ellis and 174-pounder Jake Huffman.
'We just got after them right away,' said OSU head coach Joe Wells, whose team won the night's first five matches to take a 20-0 lead. 'A couple of the older guys went out and showed the younger guys how it's done. They were aggressive, they kept after it and scored a lot points, and that took pressure off everyone else ... It's an emotional thing when somebody gets you off to a start like that. It affects you.'
The Beavers will be in Redmond on Friday for the Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals, taking on Portland State, Cal State-Fullerton, 16th-ranked Wisconsin and Pacific Lutheran. OSU returns home on Sunday, Jan. 12 against 13th-ranked Central Michigan at 2 p.m.
On Saturday, Bowlby flattened CSUB's Chad Troxler in 3:23; it was the 15th pin of the senior's career, moving him into a tie for 41st place on the Beavers' all-time list of career leaders. Bowlby, ranked 10th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, improved to 13-4 this season; he's earned a pin in seven of his last 11 matches.
'Andy is going out with a game plan,' Wells said of Bowlby. 'He wants to pin everybody. He's not afraid to take a risk, to be on his back, to fight and get tired. That's a tremendous asset. Consequently, he's going to be pretty dangerous. He's working on getting better at shooting the legs, but he can throw anybody. He's fun to watch, because he's going out and going to work.'
Hook, a freshman, pinned the Roadrunners' Jon Sharpe in 3:33. Both of Hook's pins have come against Sharpe, with the first in December's Las Vegas Invitational.
'Tony used hip toss, put him on back, and pinned him about 10 seconds later,' Wells said of Hook, who had knocked off 20th-ranked Erik Norgaard of Columbia on Friday.
Saturday's meet started at 165 pounds, with Ellis taking a 13-5 major decision over Brian Busby. That helped the sophomore bounce back from a rough Friday in which he'd lost in OSU's duals against Columbia and Fresno State.
'Matt started us off great,' Wells said. 'He went out, attacked, scored and let the guy go, attacked again, scored again - that really got us off to the right start. When you go out and put the pressure on the guy and score a bunch, then it's a lot easier for everybody else coming behind you ... he was determined he'd go score a lot of points and he did.'
Huffman added another major decision at 174 pounds to keep the Beavers' momentum building, then 197-pounder Jason Lovell and 141-pounder Mike Unger Jr. also gutted out wins for OSU.Lovell, who fought through minor injuries on Friday, took early control of an 8-5 win over Scott O'Rear. But midway through the match, Lovell found himself on his back for a prolonged period; he struggled to avoid the pin, worked his way back on top and went on to the victory.
'You like to see that ability to come back and fight through adversity, and Jason showed that,' Wells said.
Unger went into overtime with CSUB's Anthony Baza, then had to take over one minute of injury time in the extra period. When the match restarted, Unger managed a takedown within a few seconds for a 12-10 win.
'Their kid shot, and Mike knocked him down and finished it off real quick,' Wells said. 'I think Mike got more takedowns this weekend than he'd had in the whole start of the season, and that's a good sign for him.'
