Kapono, Bruins Too Much For Cougars
PULLMAN, WASH. (AP) - Senior forward Jason Kapono scored a career-high 44points Saturday to lead UCLA past Washington State 98-83.
Kapono went 14-for-19 from the field, including 9-for-10 on 3-pointers, and7-for-7 at the free-throw line. He broke his own school record of seven3-pointers in one game.
UCLA (4-5, 2-0 Pacific-10 Conference) defeated Washington State (5-6, 0-2)for the 20th straight time. Marcus Moore led WSU with 22 points.
The Bruins shot season bests of 63.5 percent, 40-for-63, from the field,64.7 percent, 11-for-17, from 3-point range and 87.5 percent, 7-for-8, from thefree-throw line. WSU shot 37.5 percent from the field, including 35.5 percenton 3-pointers, and 72 percent from the line.
Kapono, who had scored his career high of 28 points five times, had 25points at the half. UCLA led 53-37 at halftime.
Despite Kapano's big night, four teammates scored 10 or more points,including T.J. Cummings with 16. Kapano tied his career high of six assists.
The Cougars never came closer than eight points in the second half. Seniorswingman Cedrick Hughey, making the first start in his two years at WSU due tothe back injury of Milton Riley, scored a career-high 15 points.
Senior guard Jerry McNair, who averaged 11.6 points last season, played hisfirst game for WSU after gaining academic eligibility.
