No. 7 Michigan Takes Down Oregon Wrestling
Jan. 4, 2003
Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Oregon wrestling team was unable to upset the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines, falling on the road, 35-6. Senior Tony Overstake, No. 20 at 149, and sophomore Shane Webster, No. 10 at 174, each won their matches by decision to score the Ducks' points.
'We have to eliminate mistakes,' head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'We made fundamental mistakes in close matches that cost us. We're hoping we learn something from this.'
Many of Oregon's wrestlers came close in their matches, but were unable to come out on top. Jason Harless (133) nearly upset No. 8 Foley Dowd, but eventually fell in a narrow decision, 9-8. In the very next match, No. 17 Clark Forward of Michigan held off senior Casey Hunt, 9-7. Oregon's other close loss came at 165, where Luke Larwin lost a decision to Pat Owen, 5-3.
Overstake was able to pull out a close win at 149, defeating Jeremy Tobias, 8-7. Webster controlled his match to defeat R.J. Boudro at 174, 7-3. Both Oregon wrestlers were coming off impressive performances at the Reno Tournament of Champions, where Overstake took second and Webster took third.
The Ducks will compete in the Oregon Classic Friday against three other teams. The Ducks will face Pacific, Central Michigan and Wisconsin all in one day.
