Jan. 8, 2003

Seattle - Four seniors on the Washington football team will be competing in upcoming college football all-star games. Inside linebacker Ben Mahdavi and tight end Kevin Ware will play for the West squad in Saturday's East-West Shrine Game in San Francisco. On Jan. 25 placekicker John Anderson and defensive end Kai Ellis will lineup on opposite sides of the field for the Rotary Gridiron Classic in Orlando. Anderson, a native of Boynton Beach, Florida, will kick for Team Florida while Ellis will suit up for Team USA.

Mahdavi started the last 33 games of his career as a Husky and compiled a total of 237 tackles. A captain in 2002, he shared the team lead in tackles with 100 and was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection. It marked the second consecutive season he has led the Huskies in tackles. He became just the fourth UW player since 1987 to post 80 tackles in consecutive seasons.

Ware caught 42 passes as a senior, the second highest single-season total in Washington history. He was also an honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection and a semifinalist for the Mackey Award which is awarded to the nation's top tight end. Ware finished among the top 10 tight ends in the nation in terms of receptions. His 463 receiving yards was the third highest total ever by a Husky. He was tied for second on the team with five touchdown catches.

Anderson ended his Husky career second on UW's all-time field goal list with 61. A second-team All-Pac-10 selection, he ranked seventh in the nation with 1.69 field goals per game. He was the Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week after making five field goals in the Huskies' upset of third-ranked Washington State, including three kicks during overtime periods.

Ellis also earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors after finishing the 2002 season with 51 tackles, including 11 for lost yardage and seven sacks. At the Huskies annual awards banquet he was named the winner of both the John P. Angel Lineman of the Year and the L. Wait Rising Lineman of the Year.
