Bears Take Charge at Milwaukee Tennis Classic, Place Three in Semis
Jan. 9, 2003
Milwaukee, Wis. - Whomever made up the seedings for the Milwaukee Classic is beginning to look like a prophet. The top four seeds, including all three of Cal's participants, have moved on to tomorrow's semifinal round at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic taking place at the Helfaer Tennis Center in Milwaukee.
In the Round of 16, the No. 1 seed Raquel Kops-Jones faced her stiffest challenge yet, taking on Cincinnati's Jennifer Capuzzi. The senior Bearcat took Kops-Jones to a seven-game second set, but was ultimately defeated by the Cal star, 6-2, 7-6. Kops-Jones then went on to blow past the No. 5 seed Caitlin Burke of Cedarburg, 6-2, 6-1, in quarterfinal action - setting up a semifinal matchup with teammate Nicole Havlicek.
The No. 4 seed Havlicek has been pushed to three sets on two occasions, but has somehow managed to come out on top in advancing to the semifinals. Cincinnati's Lindsey Molony challenged Havlicek to a three set duel, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, in the Round of 16 and Racine's Lindsey Stauss endured a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, defeat in the quarterfinal round. Now, Havlicek and Kops-Jones will square off at 5:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon, guaranteeing a Cal player in the championship match.
The No. 2 seed, Catherine Lynch, may have displayed the most impressive performance for the Bears, dropping only one game in her first two matches. After blanking Butler's Christina Laun in the Round of 32, Lynch rallied past Duquesne's Veronica Garcia-Briseno, 6-1, 6-0, in the Round of 16. In the quarters, though, the Cal junior ran into the No. 6 seed Jill Buckley of Kentucky, who pushed the match to three sets. Lynch prevailed with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory to propel her into the semis against No. 3 seed Liina Suurvarik of Illinois State, Friday at 12:00 noon.
On the doubles front, Kops-Jones and her partner Liina Suurvarik of Illinois State advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-2 victory over Sarah Foster and Jaclyn Leeper of Murray State. The duo then defeated Purdue's Amy Walgenbach and Shawna Zuccarini, 8-4, to advance to tomorrow's semifinal match at 1:00 p.m. The all-Cal tandem of Havlicek and Lynch also advanced to the quarterfinal round with their 8-4 triumph over Marquette's Alexandra Stankovic and Eva Trujillo-Herrera on Wednesday. But Cedarburg's Caitlin Burke and Greendale's Kaylan Caiati, both University of Wisconsin prospects, edged the Cal pair, 8-9, to end the run. Burke and Caiati will tangle with Kops-Jones and Suurvarik in tomorrow's semifinal matchup.
