Los Angeles, Calif. -- Jamil Al-Agba of Camarillo, Calif., has signed a letter of intent with the USC men's tennis team, head coach Peter Smith announced today.
Al-Agba, a 5-foot-10 right-hander who attends Laurel Springs High in Ojai, Calif., recently captured the 2002 California Bowl by upsetting the Boys' 18 No. 1 and No. 4 ranked players.
'Jamil is the type of player and person that I came to USC to coach,' said Smith, who is entering his first season at the helm of the Trojan program. 'He is very serious about his tennis and is a very good student. There is a special determination about him that brings out all of his talents. During his time here he will undoubtedly make his mark in USC lore.'
Al-Agba is currently ranked No. 10 on the 2002 USTA Junior Seeding/Selection list and boasts a 29-9 record for the year. In addition to his California Bowl victory, which he won in December, he also captured the 2002 Muterspaw Championship in April and advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA Clay Court Championships in July.
