Jan. 12, 2003
Los Angeles, CA - The UCLA women's basketball team earned its sixth consecutive victory while snapping a three-game losing streak to its cross-town rival in a 72-64 decision over USC in front of 6,172 in Pauley Pavilion. Bruin senior guard Michelle Greco led all players with 28 points and seven rebounds and scored UCLA's last nine points of the game.
After holding a 32-27 halftime advantage, UCLA jumped out to a 13-point lead in the second half, 60-47 at the 7:24 mark on a Nikki Blue jumper. USC quickly charged back with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 60-57 after Rachel Woodward's jumper at 5:21. The Women of Troy came to within one point, 65-64 at the 1:41 mark on a pair of Ebony Hoffman free throws, but Greco gave UCLA some breathing room on the Bruins' next possession. With three Trojan defenders guarding her, Greco drove from the left side of the basket for a layup and was fouled on the play. She made the subsequent free throw to increase the lead to 68-64 and then hit four more free throws in the remaining minute to seal the victory.
In the first half, USC jumped out to a 19-13 lead behind eight quick points from Aisha Hollans, but UCLA came back with a 11-2 run to take a three-point lead. A pair of three-pointers from Gennifer Arranaga , including one with seven seconds remaining, increased the margin to five points, 32-27 at the end of the half.
Greco, who played all 40 minutes in the game, recorded her 30th 20-point game in her career, and her 12-12 shooting from the free throw line tied a school record. Blue joined Greco in double-figure scoring with 12 points. Hollans led USC with 17 points and also added 10 rebounds. Hoffman also had a double-double, her seventh of the year, with 10 points and 16 boards.
The Bruins maintained their lead in the Pac-10, improving to 5-0 in the conference and 10-4 overall. USC falls to 6-10, 1-4 in the Pac-10. Both teams will travel to Arizona next week for matchups against the Wildcats and Sun Devils. UCLA plays Arizona State on Thursday, Jan. 16, while the Women of Troy face Arizona.
