Women's Tennis Begins Season at Pac-10 Indoor Championships
Jan. 15, 2003
EUGENE - The No. 34-ranked women's tennis team will begin its regular season Friday at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash. The three-day tournament will feature players from all of the Pac-10 schools.
All nine Pac-10 schools are ranked in the top 35, with five players ranked in the top 10 in the nation in singles play.
'The competition doesn't get any tougher than this,' head coach Nils Schyllander said. 'It'll give us a good chance to see where we're at.'
Sophomore Daria Panova, who was recently ranked No. 27 in the national rankings, is the only player who has played at more than one tournament so far this season. The other seven players on the team only played at the ITA Regional Championships, while rain prevented them from playing in a tournament in San Diego.
'We haven't seen them enough in competitive situations,' Schyllander said. 'They've played each other a lot, so they're excited to play somebody else finally.'
Three freshmen will get their first taste of Pac-10 play. Anna Leksinska, Jamie Marshall and Julie Merle all have the talent to play with some of the conference's best, and the early-season matches should prove valuable towards the end of the year.
Oregon's dual match season will begin the following week by playing against Colorado and Illinois on the road.
