Bruin Players Advance at Sherwood Collegiate Cup

LOS ANGELES - Five UCLA men's tennis players won first-round singles matches Friday in the opening day of competition at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup at the Sherwood Country Club.

Top-seeded Tobias Clemens opened the day up with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over USC's Parker Collins. Bruin senior Rodrigo Grilli also won in straight sets, downing Dean Wallace of Cal, 6-2, 6-2.

In addition to Clemens and Grilli, three other Bruins notched straight-set victories Friday, including Marcin Matkowski, Erfan Djahangiri and Chris Lam.

All three Bruin freshmen who were competing in the singles draw dropped their first round singles matches. Lassi Ketola was also upset in the first round.

In doubles play, four UCLA teams advanced to second-round play, including Grilli/Matkowski, Lam/Surapol, Djahangiri/Francis and Clemens/Ketola.
