Cal Leads at Dallas Morning News Classic

DALLAS, Texas- - The No. 3 University of California men's swimming team is leading the field at the Dallas Morning News Swimming and Diving Classic held at Southern Methodist University's Perkins Natatorium in Dallas, Texas. The Golden Bears hold the top spot with 186 points, while runner-up Florida has 157 points.
Cal's lead was bolstered by three individual wins from freshman Michael Cavic. Cavic placed first in the 50 free with a pool record of 19.85 and first in the 100 100 fly with a time of 46.94. Junior Alex Lim bested his meet record set last year in the 100 back, winning the event in 46.99. Senior Quentin Byma contributed a win in the 100 breast with an NCAA consideration time of 54.97.
The Bears' 400 medley relay team (Lim, Byma, Cavic, Draganja) was also victorious, posting its best time of the season at 3:12.10. Cal's 800 free relay (Molina, Dorr, Bruckart, Thiele) also turned in a season best (6:36.88) runner-up finish.
Other impressive swims included freshmen Jens Thiele and Miguel Molina's wins in consolation finals. Thiele won the 100 back (49.69) and 200 free (1:38.63) consolations, while Molina won the 400 IM with his best performance of the season in 3:53.19. Sophomore Duje Draganja also notched a consolation victory in the 50 free (20.43).
On the diving side, senior Nic Bartolotta finished fifth in the one-meter diving competition with an NCAA qualifying mark of 294.50.
Cal returns to action tomorrow evening with the second half of the meet beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Bears look to clinch their second consecutive Dallas Morning News Swimming and Diving Classic crown.
