Panova in Pac-10 Indoor Semis

Jan. 17, 2003

SEATTLE - Sophomore Daria Panova, ranked No. 28 in the nation, defeated two top 35 players to advance to the semifinals at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships. Both victories came in straight sets, including her second consecutive victory over No. 6-ranked Sara Walker of UCLA.

The Ducks have eight players in four different singles flights, with Panova and Courtney Nagle in the top flight. Oregon has four doubles teams in two flights.

'Across the board, they've just competed so hard,' head coach Nils Schyllander said.

Senior captain Monika Gieczys played one of the better matches of the day in the second flight of singles. Gieczys lost her first set, but fought back to defeat Cindy Sureephong of Arizona State, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.

'She just came back and exemplified what we're all about,' Schyllander said. 'She showed great leadership out there.'

Full results were not available at press time, with both singles and doubles action still taking place. The tournament will continue through Sunday in Seattle.
