Stanford Competes In First Day of Kickoff Classic

Las Vegas, Nev. - The Stanford women's tennis team competed in the first day of the 2003 Collegiate Tennis Kickoff Classic at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas. Three Cardinal advanced in singles play, while Stanford's one doubles team will move on to compete on Saturday.
Sophomore Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) and freshmen Amber Liu (La Mesa, CA) and Alice Barnes (Cambridge, UK) all received first round byes. Freshman Joanna Kao (Fullerton, CA) dropped her first round match to UNLV's Paulina Janus, 6-1, 6-1.
In second round action, all three Cardinal advanced to the quarterfinals. Burdette defeated Tracie Chong of UNLV in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, while Liu cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Florida's Jennifer Magley. Barnes recorded a win over UNLV's Agnieszka Abram 6-0, 6-4. Stanford's doubles team of Barnes and Liu defeated Georgia duo Lori Grey and Evgenia Subbotina 8-4 to advance to the semifinals.
Competition will continue tomorrow in Las Vegas, with singles quarterfinal action beginning at 9:30 a.m. while doubles play picks up at 3:00 p.m.
