Jan. 18, 2003

The Ducks finished strong in the second day of play at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships. The Ducks were led by sophomore Daria Panova and junior Courtney Nagle.

Panova defeated Washington's Claire Carter 7-6, 6-4 for the berth to the finals.

'Having Daria in the finals for Indoor Pac-10's is huge,' head coach Nils Schyllander said. 'She played a great match, she wasn't on her best game but she dug deep and found a way to win.'

Nagle upset Jewel Peterson of USC, ranked No. 3 in the nation. Nagle defeated Peterson in the consolation round of flight one 7-6, 7-5.

'Nagle had a huge win today. She really took in a big step beating the No. 3 player in the country. I think this will have a tremendous impact on her confidence. She really showed her play was real from the fall,' Schyllander said after the big day.

Junior Davina Mendiburu defeated Debbie Larocque of Arizona 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 in the back draw of flight two. Freshman Julie Merle defeated Zsofi Fodor of Washington State 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the consolation round of flight three.

'It has been a good day for the ducks,' Schyllander said.

Play is still underway and full results were not available at press time. Pac-10 Indoor Championships will continue Sunday in Seattle.
