Arizona's Dee-Dee Wheeler Named Pac-10 Player of Week
Jan. 20, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- ARIZONA sophomore guard Dee-Dee Wheeler has been named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 13-19, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Wheeler, from Chicago, Ill., averaged 25.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game while leading 22nd-ranked Arizona to a sweep of the Los Angeles schools at home last week. Wheeler shot 64.5 percent (20-of-31) from the field, including a blazing 70.0 percent (7-of-10) from 3-point range on the weekend.
Against USC Jan. 16, Wheeler shot 10 for 16 from the floor on her way to a game-high 23 points as the Cats edged the Women of Troy, 79-76. She pulled down six rebounds in the game and scored 16 second-half points. During USC's 15-4 run in the final four minutes, Wheeler scored Arizona's only four points, back-to-back, and provided UA with the cushion to win the contest.
Wheeler knocked down 10 of her 15 shot attempts Jan. 18 against UCLA, including a 6-of-8 mark from 3-point range, to score a game-high 27 points in Arizona's 80-61 win over UCLA. The victory snapped the Bruins' seven-game win streak and gave them their first Pac-10 loss on the year. Wheeler also recorded a career-high tying nine rebounds in the contest and was key in stopping a comeback by UCLA. When the Bruins cut UA's lead to six points midway through the second half, Wheeler nailed her sixth 3-pointer of the game and added a lay-up immediately after that to put the Cats ahead by 11 points. UCLA never came closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Wheeler, the 2002 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, and the 27th all-time selection for Arizona.
