Cal Back in Boise for Western Indoor Classic

CAL CONTINUES STRING OF FOUR STRAIGHT INDOOR MEETS
The California men's and women's track and field teams head back to Boise, ID to compete in the Western Indoor Classic Saturday, Jan. 25. The meet marks the second consecutive in Boise for the Bears who open the indoor season with four straight competitions. Boise State hosts the five-team meet. Field events begin at 9 a.m. with the men's hammer throw. The first running event is the women's 60m high hurdles preliminaries at 10 a.m., and the meet concludes with the men's 4x400 relay at 2:25 p.m.
The field for the Western Indoor Classic consists of Cal, Boise State, Idaho State, Stanford and Cal State Fullerton. Last weekend, Boise State won four of five scoring duals at the Bandanna Indoor Invitational. Idaho State hosted its first indoor meet, the Snake River Open, featuring teams from Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley State, Weber State and Southern Utah. The Bengals won nine total events (6 men, 3 women) and were led by Paul Hoffman's wins in the mile and 3000m runs. On the women's side, Selena Frazier won the 200m and 400m events. This meet marks the first for Stanford and Cal State Fullerton, though both of those teams had competitors at last weekend's Pole Vault Summit held in Reno, NV.
CAL'S LAST TIME OUT
Cal's men's and women's track and field teams opened the indoor season at the Boise State Bandanna Indoor Invitational last Saturday. Cal competed against teams from host Boise State, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Dominguez Hills, UNLV and Nevada. Leaders on the women's side included senior Erin Belger's win in the 800m (2:16.23) and the Bears' 4x400m relay team which placed second in 3:54.10. Sophomore Trinety White and junior Jenna Johnson notched runner-up finishes in the triple jump (38-11.75) and shot put (45-5.75), respectively. Sophomore Tamrya d'Artenay also put in a strong showing, finishing third in the weight throw (54-8). Top finishes on the men's side included junior Robert Kennedy's win in the long jump (23-6.25) and junior Tim Bogdanof's win in the 60mH (7.8h). Cal's 4x400m relay team placed second with a time of 3:19.32, while junior Jeremiah Tolbert posted a runner-up finish in the long jump (22-0.25). Junior Bruce Giron placed second in the triple jump (48-6).
NEWCOMERS PERFORM WELL IN FIRST COLLEGIATE MEET
The freshmen that competed in last weekend's Boise State Bandanna Indoor Invitational looked anything but inexperienced as Qadriyyah Abdullah, Teak Wilburn and Toby Atawo each earned a top three finish in their events. Abdullah placed third in the long jump (18-7), while Wilburn and Atawo finished second in the high jump (7-0.50) and 60m-dash (6.8h), respectively.
CAL HOSTS ALL COMERS TRACK & FIELD SERIES
Every Saturday in February the Bears will host an all comers track & field meet. All events begin at 11 a.m., except the hammer which starts at 8:30 a.m. The meet is open to all age groups, high school, open and master athletes. The events will be grouped according to gender and ability level. Admission is $2 per person to the stadium.
