No. 7 Bruins to Host Long Beach St. and Pepperdine

The No. 7 Bruins will face local rivals Long Beach State and Pepperdine to open the 2003 dual-match season this week. UCLA and Long Beach St. will faceoff at 1:30 p.m. this Thursday. The Bruins will host Pepperdine at noon on Saturday. Both matches are at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA and Long Beach St. have not met since 1987, as the Bruins own a 26-0 all-time record vs. the 49ers. UCLA is 34-12 all time vs. Pepperdine, with the Bruins winning both dual matches against the Waves last year.

Bruins Finish Up Play at Pac-10 Indoors . . .
UCLA freshman Shilpa Joshi and sophomore Anya Loncaric teamed together to claim the Flight-II doubles title Sunday at the Pac-10 Indoor Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Washington. Joshi and Loncaric defeated USC's Melissa Esmero/Maureen Diaz, 8-4 in the championship match. Other highlights for the UCLA women's tennis team over the weekend included a semifinal showing by freshmen Jackie Carleton and Laura Gordon in the Flight-I doubles draw, as well as a semifinal appearance by freshman Susi Wild in the Flight-II consolation draw.

Bruins in the ITA Rankings . . .
Two Bruin players made the preseason ITA singles list, as senior Sara Walker checked in at No. 6, and freshman Jackie Carleton is ranked No. 84. As a team, the Bruins are ranked No. 7 nationally.

Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is currently in her seventh season as the head coach of the UCLA women's tennis program with a career record of 96-58. In her first six seasons at UCLA, Sampras guided the Bruins to five top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including three top-5 showings (1997, 2000, and 2002). In 2000, she was named the ITA West Region Coach of the Year. The former Stella Sampras married Steve Webster on January 3, 2003.
