Arizona Governor to Make Appearance at UA Women's Basketball Game

Jan. 22, 2003

TUCSON (Jan. 22) -- Governor Janet Napolitano will be a 'guest coach' at an upcoming University of Arizona women's basketball game, announced head coach Joan Bonvicini on Wednesday. The governor will be a guest on the Wildcat bench at the home game against Washington State on Saturday, Feb. 8, in the McKale Center.

Selected Wildcat women's basketball boosters have been given the privilege of joining the team on the bench at every home game for the last 12 years. Guest coaches are provided the opportunity to see the players and coaches in action in a much different environment than merely sitting in the stands. They are given a special guided tour of the basketball facilities before the game, sit on the team bench during the game and are in the locker room during the pre-game chalk talk, at halftime and post-game, gaining an insider's view of what goes on behind the scenes on game-day.

'We're very excited to know that Governor Napolitano has an interest in our program,' said Bonvicini, who is in her 12th season at Arizona. 'It will be an honor to have her on our bench and in our locker room.'

'I am really looking forward to being the guest coach for the Wildcats,' Napolitano said. 'I'm not sure how much expertise I could offer that Coach Bonvicini doesn't have already, but I'm ready to be a very vocal supporter of the players.'

The game is scheduled to tip at 2 p.m. on Feb. 8, and plenty of tickets are still available by calling the UA Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-452-2287.
