Beavers Edge Top-Ranked Bruins
Tanya Ricioli scored a 9.875 on her floor routine to clinch a victory over No. 1 UCLA as the 13th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team beat the Bruins, 195.750-195.475, in front of a loud crowd of 4,289 in OSU's home opener at Gill Coliseum on Friday night.
'I'm pleased with how our team has been stepping up. This is our fourth meet, and I'm real pleased with our progress,' coach Tanya Chaplin said.
The top-ranked Bruins led 147.375-146.725 after three rotations, but UCLA struggled on beam while OSU was solid on floor in the final rotation. Holly Murdock, UCLA's second competitor on beam, fell twice to open the door. The next three Bruins bounced back, scoring a 9.825, a 9.875 and a 9.95, but Alyssa Beckerman fell twice in the anchor spot to force the Bruins to count an 8.750.
Still, OSU hadn't yet secured the win. The Beavers still had to wait for Ricioli to compete on floor, and she needed to hit to give OSU the win. The Bruins had a slight edge, 195.475-195.450, before Ricioli took the floor. She nailed her routine for a 9.875, allowing the Beavers to drop a 9.575 and walk away with the upset win.
It was a complete role reversal from last week's meet at Arizona, when the Beavers were in UCLA's situation. OSU lost to the Wildcats but would have won had the Beavers not had to have counted three falls. That meet gave OSU a wake-up call that paid off on Friday.
'We had a lot to build on. We were disappointed with what happened at Arizona, and that really fired the team up. They had a long team meeting after that,' Chaplin said. 'It wasn't just because they had UCLA this week. They had the rest of the season ahead of them.'
This time around the Beavers didn't have to count a fall as they finished with their second highest score of the season. They opened with a 48.725 on vault, led by a 9.825 from Daylee Ingalls and a 9.80 from Morales.
From then, it was on to bars, one of the events the Beavers struggled on at Arizona last week. OSU responded with a 49.000, led by a 9.875 from Elizabeth Jillson and a 9.825 from Ricioli. OSU also got a career-high 9.80 from Lamun.
OSU also hit all six beam routines a week after three of the six competitors fell, and the Beavers ended up with a season-high 49.000 on the event. Ricioli again led the team with a 9.875, with Ingalls chipping in a 9.825. Elaine Yoder added a 9.80, and the Beavers also counted Lamun's 9.775 and Morales' 9.725.
UCLA won all five individual event titles, although the Beavers had several top three finishes. Jamie Dantzscher's 9.90 earned first on bars, with Jillson placing second and Ricioli finishing in a three-way tie for third. Jeanette Antolin and Onnie Willis shared the vault title with a pair of 9.90 scores, and Kate Richardson won both beam (9.95) and floor (9.90). Ricioli tied for second on both beam and floor for the Beavers.
Richardson won the all-around with a 39.525. Ricioli placed third with a 39.250, her 10th 39-plus performance of her career. That moves her into a tie for third with former All-American Amy Durham for the most 39-plus meets in an OSU career.
