LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked UCLA men's tennis team registered its second shutout in as many matches Friday, downing visiting Fresno State, 7-0 in a non-conference showdown at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, which blanked UC Irvine in their season opener last week, improve to 2-0 on the year. With the loss, Fresno State falls to 1-1.
Similar to last week's match against the Anteaters, the Bruins cruised in doubles play claiming all three matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles action.
In singles play, 12th-ranked Tobias Clemens of UCLA defeated fellow German Stefan Suta, 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 1 position. Clemens improved his record to 14-2 on the year, including a 2-0 mark in dual-match play.
Bruin senior Rodrigo Grilli, who saw his first dual-match singles action of the year after only playing doubles against UC Irvine, posted a solid, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alex Krohn at No. 3 singles.
Seniors Erfan Djahangiri and Lassi Ketola also recorded straight-set victories without too much trouble. Djahangiri registered a 6-4, 7-5 win over FSU's Sergui Modoc at No. 4 singles, and Ketola posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nima Roshan in the No. 6 slot.
Two Bruins that got behind early but were able to bounce back and win were Marcin Matkowski and Chris Lam. After dropping the first set to FSU's Greg Shearer at No. 2 singles, Matkowski rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory. Lam was down 5-1 in the first set of his match with Marc Schaerer, battling back for a 7-6(0), 6-1 decision.
Next up for UCLA will be UNLV on Jan. 28 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m.
