No. 10 Stanford Defeats California in Conference Meet
Jan. 24, 2003
Berkeley, Calif. - No. 10 Stanford (4-1, 2-0) defeated California (3-2, 0-2) in the Bears' home opener, 195.250 - 192.950, Friday evening at Haas Pavilion in front of a raucous crowd of 1,007. The loss was not without merit, though, as several Bears received personal high marks throughout the evening.
Stanford took a slim lead after the first rotation and never looked back, outscoring Cal on three of the four events. The Bears started strong on the vault, as three Cal gymnasts tied personal bests. For the second week in a row, freshman Monique Chang recorded a team-high 9.850 on the vault to finish second in the event. Senior Janet McKnight's 9.850 was not a career high, but was good enough for third place. Stanford led 48.900 - 48.675 after the first rotation.
On the bars, McKnight and sophomore My-Lan Dodd both tied personal high marks with scores of 9.875 and 9.900, respectively. After two rotations the Cardinal held a slim 97.725 - 97.250 lead. The beam rotation became the Achilles' heal for the Bears, though, as multiple Cal gymnasts could not find their stride. Freshman Britani Pittullo was the lone bright spot for the Bears on the balance beam, finishing fourth in the event with a career best score of 9.800. Sophomore Lauren Shipp added her personal best mark of 9.850 in an exhibition. After three events, Stanford held a commanding 146.275 - 144.200 lead.
California notched its best mark of the evening on floor, besting Stanford 48.750 - 48.550 in the event. Dodd and junior Stephanie Kim shined for the Bears, as Dodd recorded a 9.850, good for first place, and Kim tied her personal best score of 9.825 to finish in fourth. But Stanford wrapped up the meet with an impressive 48.975 score on the beam rotation, taking the top three spots.
In the all-around competition, Stanford took the top two spots while Cal's Dodd and Pittullo finished third and fourth, respectively.
Cal returns to action on Friday Jan. 31, as it travels to Boise, Idaho to face off against Boise State at 7:00 p.m.
