TEMPE, Ariz. -- In a meet that was not decided until the final event of the day, the No. 16 Arizona State Women's Swimming & Diving team (4-5, 0-4 Pac-10) lost a close battle with the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal 159-141 this afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The Sun Devil women recorded several strong swims and were victorious in seven events on the day.
Freestyle events were a strong suit for ASU on Saturday, as they won all of those races but the 200 free. The Sun Devils recorded a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50 free with Claire Hedenskog (23.46), Florence Mauro (24.22) and Erin Baldinger (24.30) taking the top three spots. In the next event, the 100 free, Florencia Szigeti (50.86) and Hedenskog (51.18) finished first and second.
In the distance freestyle events, Kathryn Hennessy touched first in the 1000 free (10:09.48), while Sandra Steffensen outdistanced the field in the 500 free with a time of 4:56.64. The 200 free relay squad of Szigeti, Mauro, Baldinger and Hedenskog (1:34.13) won by a margin of less than three-tenths of a second to give the Sun Devils a sweep of the relay events. The opening race of the day saw ASU's 200 medley of Szigeti, gnes Kovcs, Mauro and Hedenskog come away with a win in 1:43.40.
In the marquee matchup of the afternoon between the top two breastrokers in the NCAA, Stanford's Tara Kirk edged out ASU's gnes Kovcs in both the 100 and 200 breast. Kirk registered a 1:00.55 to Kovcs' 1:02.51 in the 100, and in the 200 the advantage went to Kirk 2:09.66 to 2:10.18. Kirsten Gilbert of Stanford finished third in the 200 breast in 2:19.33.
In the diving pool, ASU's Trisha Tumlinson, who set a school record yesterday on the 1-meter, split the 1-meter and 3-meter events with Stanford's Ashlee Rosenthal. Tumlinson was victorious in the 1-meter with a score of 285.15, while her 302.70 on the 3-meter fell short of Rosenthal's 316.20.
