Bruins Face UCI, No. 9 USC This Week

The No. 7 UCLA women's tennis team will face UC Irvine and No. 9 USC this week at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCI comes into Thursday's match with a 1-1 record, while the Women of Troy are 2-0. Last weekend, USC defeated Irvine 7-0. All-time, the Bruins hold a 29-2 advantage over Irvine, winning 6-1 a year ago. USC has the series advantage, 34-32, but the Bruins won two of three matches last year, including a 4-1 win in the NCAA Tournament's round of 16.

The Gauntlet Battle Continues . . .
The next installment of the Lexus Gauntlet Challenge takes place on Friday when the Bruins and Trojans do battle for the first time in tennis this season. Currently, each school has 25 points in the race for the Gauntlet Trophy. The UCLA and USC men's tennis teams will also do battle on Friday, with that contest held at USC.

Bruins Start Season with a Sweep . . .
UCLA opened its dual-match season with a weekend sweep, defeating Long Beach State and Pepperdine. In the Bruins' 7-0 win over the 49ers, Sara Walker, ranked sixth nationally, recorded the most convincing victory of the afternoon, defeating Long Beach State's Laura Thomas 6-1, 6-1. On Saturday, the Bruins defeated Pepperdine 6-1. Walker continued her dominance with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Pepperdine's Monika Horvath. The Bruins also knocked off both of the Waves' ranked singles players, 52nd-ranked Veronica Koksova and 91st-ranked Charlotte Vernaz.

Stella Sampras Webster Approaches 100th Win. . .
If the Bruins sweep UCI and USC this week, head coach Stella Sampras Webster will earn her 100th career victory against 58 defeats in just her seventh season at UCLA. In Sampras Webster's first six seasons, she guided the Bruins to five top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including three top-5 showings (1997, 2000, and 2002). In 2000, she was named the ITA West Region Coach of the Year. The former Stella Sampras married Steve Webster on January 3, 2003.
