Jan. 28, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Junior All-American Tanya Ricioli has been named the Pacific-10 Gymnast of the Week after leading the Beavers to an upset of then-No. 1 UCLA on January 24, the conference office announced Tuesday.
The then-No. 13 Beavers defeated the Bruins 195.750-195.475 to give OSU its first win over UCLA since 1998.
Ricioli finished the meet with a 39.250 all-around score, with her floor score clinching the victory for the Beavers. The Bruins had finished competing and had scored a 195.475, but Ricioli, the final competitor of the night, needed to hit her floor routine in order for the Beavers to win. Heading into her routine, OSU had a score of 195.450, slightly behind UCLA. Ricioli nailed her routine for a 9.875, allowing the Beavers to drop a 9.575 and finish with a 195.750 to overtake the Bruins.
Her 9.875 was good for a tie for second place on floor, and she also tied for second with a 9.875 on beam. Her 9.825 on bars was good for third place.
Her 39.250 in the all-around was her 10th career 39-plus all-around score. That moved her into a tie for third on OSU's list of career 39-plus scores.
Ricioli's Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week award is the second of her career; she was honored once as a freshman in 2000 as well.
