Softball Tabbed Sixth In NFCA Preseason Poll

SEATTLE - The Washington softball team enters the 2003 season with a No. 6 ranking in the NFCA/USA Today Coaches Poll as announced today by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

UCLA received the No. 1 spot, followed by World Series runner-up Arizona at No. 2 and defending National Champions California in the No. 3 position. Rounding out the top five were Michigan and Nebraska who shared the No. 4 ranking. In all, seven of the eight Pac-10 schools that sponsor softball were among the top-25, including No. 13 Arizona State, No. 14 Stanford and No. 23 Oregon.

Washington is scheduled to face 14 of the remaining 24 ranked teams, as well as 28th-ranked Iowa, during the 2003 campaign. The Huskies open play on Thursday, Feb. 6 against Santa Clara at the Hawaii Chevron Classic in Honolulu. The field will also include host Hawaii, Oklahoma State and Louisville. The tournament will run through Sunday, Feb. 9.

The USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I Top 25 is voted on by 22 NCAA Division I coaches representing all regions.
