Cougars Snap UA Season Opener Winning Streak

TUCSON - Brigham Young pitcher Jeff Mousser (1-0) kept Arizona hitters offstride most the game, striking out nine in six and one-third innings to keyBYU's 6-3 victory over the Cats and snap UA's nine-year string of winningits season opener.
UA freshman catcher Nick Hundley hit a home run in his first collegiateat-bat in the third, but Mousser allowed only one hit after that until theseventh inning when Hundley led off with a double and scored on Jeff vanHouten's single to make it 3-2 in BYU's favor.
BYU collected eight hits off UA starter Joe Little (0-1), who threw sixinnings and struck out five. The Cougs added four more hits off three UArelievers.
BYU took a 1-0 lead in the second, scoring on an infield grounder. KainoaObrey singled and an out later moved to third on Jake Stubblefield's singleto right. Ryan Chambers grounded to UA first baseman Pat Reilley, who optedfor the play at the bag as Obrey scored.
The Cougars extended the lead to 3-0 in the third. Doug Jackson reached onan error and Ranger Weins slugged a two-run home run over the left-centerfence.
Hundley homered in his first collegiate at-bat to cut the led to 3-1 in thebottom of the third.
BYU's Weins led off the eighth with a double, Obrey walked an out later andWeins scored on Brock Jacobsen's single to make it 4-2. Ryan Chambers addeda run-scoring single to cap the inning. The Cougars added an unearned run onan RBI off Wiens second double.
UA's Pat Reilley tripled to open the Cats's ninth and scored on a sacrificefly by Jeff Van Houten for the game's final run.
UA had not lost its season opener since 1993.
