No. 10 Bears Kick Off Season with 6-1 Victory over San Diego
Jan. 31, 2003
San Diego, Calif. - The California women's tennis (1-0) team continued its mastery over the University of San Diego (0-2) this afternoon, Jan. 31, as it defeated the Toreros, 6-1, in the Bears' season opener. Cal improves to a perfect 8-0 all-time against San Diego.
Though the Toreros played all but one singles match closely, the Bears put on a clinic in both the singles and doubles competition, losing only one match in each event.
On the singles courts, No. 12 Raquel Kops-Jones defeated San Diego's top player, Emma Murphy, 6-4, 6-3, on court No. 1. The Toreros, however, notched a victory in the No. 2 singles spot with Lauren Perl earning a 7-6 (2), 6-3 win over Cal's No. 46 Catherine Lynch. Torero No. 3 Tara Livesay gave San Diego a brief ray of hope, taking the first set, 6-3, over Cal's senior captain No. 34 Christina Fusano before losing 6-3 in the third.
In doubles play, Cal's No. 4 ranked tandem of Kops-Jones and Fusano breezed past San Diego's Laurne Kazarian and Jennifer Brown, 8-1, while Catherine Lynch and Nicole Havlicek also won, 8-2, over their opponents.
The Bears will not waste any time as they stay in San Diego tomorrow, Feb. 1, to take on the No. 28 San Diego State Aztecs at noon.
