No. 12 Beavers Score Season-High 196.275 At No. 9 Stanford
Jan. 31, 2003
STANFORD, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team turned in a season-high 196.275 to defeat San Jose State (193.425) and Seattle Pacific (187.825), but No. 9 Stanford won the four-way meet with a 196.575 at Burnham Pavilion on Friday night.
OSU's 196.275 score ties for the 15th best score in school history, and it marked the first time the Beavers had scored a 196.000 in the month of January.
Tanya Ricioli, last week's Pacific-10 Gymnast of the Week, tied for first on floor (9.925) and in the all-around (39.475), and she placed second on bars (9.90). Chrissy Lamun matched Ricioli's score on floor to claim a share of that title, and Elaine Yoder had a career-high 9.925 on beam to tie for second on that event. Lindsay Nelson's 9.875 vault earned a share of second, and her 9.875 on bars was good for a tie for third. She finished with a career-high 39.325 in the all-around to place third.
The Beavers picked up the season-high despite having to count a fall on bars in the first rotation.
'I was watching to see how they reacted (after bars), and they came back strong on the other events,' coach Tanya Chaplin said. 'I was pleased to see that because we didn't do that at Arizona, so we're making improvements. Now we're going to go back and get ready for next week's meet against Arizona State.'
OSU had three falls on bars in its opening rotation at Arizona two weeks ago, but the Beavers also had three falls on beam in the final rotation of that meet. OSU didn't have to count a fall on any event except bars this time around.
Thrse Videan started off the bars rotation with a 9.775, and Meghan Jones followed with a 9.80, but Lamun fell on OSU's third routine. Nelson got the Beavers back on track by matching her career-high with a 9.875, and Ricioli then matched her career-best of 9.90, good for OSU's best score on the event this year. Elizabeth Jillson finished up with a solid routine and looked as though the Beavers wouldn't have to count a fall, but Jillson put her hands down on her double layout dismount to force OSU to count her 9.45 score.
Yoder's career-high 9.925 on beam highlighted a season-best 49.125 for the Beavers in the second rotation. OSU also got a career-high 9.85 out of Lamun, and Ricioli added another 9.85 for the Beavers. OSU also counted Angela Morales' 9.775 and Nelson's 9.725. It was the second consecutive 49-plus beam performance for OSU, which had a 49.000 last week against UCLA.
OSU added another season-best on floor, going six-for-six for a season-high 49.400 after not counting a score lower than 9.825. Lamun and Ricioli each turned in career-highs of 9.925, good for OSU's best floor scores of the year. Morales tied her season-high with a 9.875, and Nelson's 9.85 was also a season-best. OSU also counted Videan's 9.825, allowing them to throw out Heather Justus' lead-off 9.775 score.
Three Beaver vaulters scored a 9.80 or better to close out the meet. Ricioli, who moved to the lead-off spot this week, started things off with a 9.80. Nelson scored a team-best 9.875 on OSU's second-to-last vault, and Justus capped off the meet with a 9.825. OSU also counted a 9.75 from Daylee Ingalls and a 9.70 for Morales. Jones scored a 9.75 on her yurchenko full exhibition, which would have been a career-high for the sophomore had her vault been an official routine.
