Softball Completes First Day of USF-Louisville Tournament

Arizona softball (2-0) completed the first day of the USF- Louisville Slugger tournament with a 6-0 win over Sam Houston State (0-1) and a 2-0 win over Florida Atlantic (0-1).

Arizona faced Sam Houston in the first game of the day and jumped to an early lead. With freshman Autumn Champion on base, senior Lovie Jung hit a home run to put the Cats up 2-0. Arizona went up for good in the fourth inning when junior Mackenzie Vandergeest hit a grand slam. Vandergeest hit three grand slams last season. Junior pitcher Wendy Allen pitched seven innings for Arizona. Allen struck out six batters, allowed two hits and walked one.

Freshman pitcher Alicia Hollowell led the way for the Cats in the second game against Florida Atlantic. In seven innings pitched, Hollowell struck out 11 batters and allowed two hits.Jung's home run to left field in the third inning gave Arizona a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Allyson Von Liechtenstein scored in the fifth inning off a hit by senior Lisha Ribellia.

The Cats continue action tomorrow at the USF-Louisville Tournament when they face Auburn at 11 a.m. and South Florida at 1 p.m.
