Jan. 31, 2003
SAN MARCOS, Texas - Oregon freshman Amy Harris struck out eight batters to lead the Ducks to a 2-1 victory over Texas Tech in the third game of the Southwest Texas/Century Tel Tournament in San Marcos, Texas Friday morning. With the win, Oregon improves to 2-0 while the Red Raiders fell to 0-2.
'We persevered today and I'm proud of the kids for that,' Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. 'We battled some adversity and hung on for the win and we need just need to keep getting better.'
Oregon took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore Mari Lyn Petrick drove in Lynsey Haij with an RBI single. Petrick was stellar offensively for the second consecutive game, finishing 2-for-3 against Texas Tech and 4-for-7 for the day.
Defensively, Harris kept Texas Tech in check, striking out five batters and allowing just one hit - a bunt - through five innings. In the top of the sixth, however, Texas Tech right fielder Kelly Rhyne homered over the left field fence to tie the game, 1-1.
The Ducks responded in the bottom of the sixth as Haij led off with a double to right field and later advanced to third base on a passed ball. Freshman Beth Boskovich's hit to Texas Tech second baseman Britney Stolle bounced off her glove and Haij scored on the error to give Oregon a 2-1 advantage.
Texas Tech loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and with two outs Harris struck out pinch hitter Tiffany Harrington to pick up her first collegiate win.
'It's a situation I've been in before,' Harris said. 'But it was a little more nerve-wracking because it was my first college game.'
